Try To Find The Root:

I think we are all focused on fixing the problem instead of understanding why the problem is there in the first place.

Is it stress from school, debt, maybe it’s just the weather? Whatever it is, bring out a piece of paper and write down what causes you the most issues.

Try to pick the top three and stop there. You don’t want to add even more to the stress. Write down the root, how you’re going to fix it and give yourself a goal.

An example:

Lack of friends: I’m going to start going to one Meetup a week, I will try to make one connection per Meetup and invite this person to hang out.

I’m low on cash: I am going to stop buying coffee once a day and bring my own lunches to work. This means I will save $2 a business day on coffee which is 40$ a month and I will stop buying lunch 3 days a week. $12 x 3. At month end I will have $144.

Add Some Colour To Your Life:

Recently, I was trying a monochromatic tone in my house and I was bored stiff. The lack of bright colours each day was depressing so I added a fun turquoise accent chair and some accessories. Fun pillows and a couple pieces of art to bring a pop of colour to the room. Now, I feel happier when I walk into the room.

Give Yourself A Compliment:

It sounds silly but each day I want you to stand In front of your mirror and give yourself a compliment. Out loud…seriously.

It can be anything but try to get a little deeper then “You’re beautiful”.

Try something like:

“You’re a hard worker and that sets you apart from others”

“You have a great fashion sense”

“You really worked hard this year to achieve your goals of getting better grades”

“You have an amazing positivity about you and people love that”

“You are a leader”

“You’re able to live a life without judging others”

Whatever it is, say it out loud. For an added touch, I love to write things on my mirror for that week. You’re confident, you’re special, etc.

Even if you don’t believe it now. Say it over and over and over until you do!

Do Something That Makes You Happy:

First list or think of the things that make you happy. It can be as simple as lighting candles or buying fresh cut flowers. Maybe it’s exploring the city or countryside. Once you figure out your top 5, start to do them!

Actually, a great book that came from this practice is The Book of Awesome by Neil Pasricha. Starting from his own blog and going through a very unhappy time in his life, Neil started to list all the amazing little things that made him happy. Finding money in his pocket, the smell of fresh baked goods, getting all the green lights on the way home.

One of the ways I make myself happy is through a great cup of coffee in the morning. I invest in a higher quality coffee and explore different ways to make the perfect cup.

Most mornings I sit in my comfy chair and read a magazine or browse current events on my iPad. It brings me joy each morning to gaze on the city skyline as the light touches each glass building delicately with orange and gold hues while I sip my dark roast coffee.

fashion magazine, girls just know, coffee, how to be happy, how to be happier, blogger, toronto blogger, lifestyle blogger, how to be happy, happy, become happy now, 10 ways to be happier, flowers, tulips, fresh flowers, where to buy flowers

Another thing that brings me joy is fresh flowers. I buy them bi-weekly from a local flower shop. This doesn’t need to be an extravagant bouquet of roses. My budget is $5-$7 for a bouquet and if you know where to go, for that price you can get a rather beautiful arrangement.

Release The Pressure:

I think we both know who your worst critic is and I am guessing it’s you. We put so much pressure on ourselves to be perfect. To look a certain way or not look away you have judged others. Take a chill pill and know that you’re good enough just the way you are.

Surround Yourself With Good People:

I want you to take a look at each of the people you surround yourself with daily. You need to ask yourself one question: Do they bring you up or do they bring you down?

The people you surround yourself with, are they challenging you to be your better self? Do you have common interest you can explore together? Are they happy when you succeed? Are they a positive person or are they constantly negative? Do they give you a backhanded compliment? Are they jealous of you?

girls just know, how to be happy, friends, girls, How to make friends, outfit of the day, how to be stylish

There have been some occasions where just because you have been friends with someone for a long time doesn’t mean you have to continue if they are not a positive force in your life. Are you depressed, angry, upset or worried every time you leave this person? Or do they make you feel like you’re “lucky” to be their friend?

A friend like this is not a friend. Not at all. And maybe it’s time you do a little less meeting up and a little more walking away. Because you are special and they are the ones with the problem.

Get In The Groove:

Find a great uplifting playlist and listen to that each morning when you wake up or when you come home from work. Let the music take over your body, smile, dance in your bedroom if you feel like it. Just let the music lift you up. In my personal experience, it’s also extremely hard to stay unhappy while blasting Disney soundtracks.

girls just know, how to build a killer playlist, best playlist 2017, top hits 2017

Be In The Present:

I find that my mind wanders when I am doing a meaningless task. I was cutting vegetables last night and I found myself thinking of all the things I have to do in the next month to hit my personal goals and worrying I wouldn’t accomplish them.

Does worrying about something that hasn’t even happened, while cutting vegetables, add to my happiness? No. It doesn’t.

Someone once said to me, “When you’re in the shower, BE IN the shower”. It’s silly to think this is advice but it is well worth your time to think about. We spend so many moments going over conversations in our head, what we should’ve said or done. We have arguments in our head that haven’t even happened yet. Why are we doing this to ourselves?

This fix won’t be overnight, you need to learn to control your thoughts. When you feel your mind drift, be conscious of it and bring it back to the present.

A great book I’ve always loved is The Power of Now: A Guide to Spiritual Enlightenment” by Eckhart Tolle. The book stresses the importance of living in the present moment and helps guide you from thinking of future or past thoughts.

Let It Out:

I know what you’re thinking, how is crying going to make me happier?!

Well, holding something in isn’t going to, so you might as well try. Sometimes all you need is a good cry and your bed. So grab a box of tissues, turn on Netflix and cozy up in a big blanket. Feel your feelings and let them out.

Know When To Get Help:

There are always times you’re going to be unhappy. But if you’ve found yourself unhappy or sad for a while now, it may be time to get professional help. It’s hard to ask for help or know when to seek it. But asking for help doesn’t make you weak, it actually makes you stronger.

Think of this person as your happiness guru. They will work with you to understand the root of the problem and help you take steps together as a team to get back to your happy self.

I hope these tips have helped you, please leave a comment on what makes you happy! And share so others can follow these steps to becoming happier.

Lipgloss Review: Hailey Baldwin for ModelCo

Tell Everyone...Email this to someoneShare on LinkedInPin on PinterestTweet about this on TwitterShare on FacebookShare on Google+

To continue my obsession with lipgloss, I thought I would try the new Hailey Baldwin for ModelCo lipgloss and see how it stacks up.

First, If you’re sitting there reading this and wondering “Who the heck is Hailey Baldwin!? And why do I care about ModelCo!?” Well, let me add this little lady and cosmetic company to your life.

Hailey Baldwin is an American Model and daughter of Stephen Baldwin. More importantly, she is the latest celebrity collaboration with ModelCo, a pretty cool makeup company.

I was first introduced to this brand when I received a lipliner in a beauty bag from my monthly subscription to Ipsy Cosmetics (Owned by mega YouTuber and now beauty mogul, Michelle Phan).

ModelCo is owned and run by a woman named Shelley Barrett and this woman knows how to run and release a good product!

The beautiful colour and staying power of this original lipliner discovery had me hooked at first apply. The prices for their products range from $10.00 – $25.00 for a single item. ModelCo offers free shipping on orders of $45.00 and up. Alternatively, they offer a flat rate of $9.95.

The gloss that I recently picked up was the Super Lips Gloss in shade Billow. This gloss is described by ModelCo as a long lasting lip lacquer and can be worn alone or over lipstick.

The packaging was fun but not too over the top. The high-quality box had a textured feel and simple writing. The gloss container itself was a fun matte ombre, starting from the gloss colour and rising to a matte black top.

Hailey Hastings, Hailey Michaels, Girls just know, Modelco, Hailey Baldwin for modelco

What I didn’t like was a small detail of the packaging. When I was looking at the names of gloss, there was no indication of what colour they were from the outside. I had to actually open the lipgloss box to find out.

Now I don’t mind doing this but the sales girls did. So my suggestion would be to put a sticker on the bottom to indicate gloss colour.

The applicator stick was everything you want in a gloss, it was stiff and able to spread the product evenly over your lips with accuracy. The colour was thick and rich with a slight stickiness. This gloss was an instant boost to my look and attitude, I felt like a sexy bombshell instantly.

Hailey Baldwin, toronto blogger, girls just know, blogger, fashion blogger, torontos best bloggers, beauty blogger, Hailey Baldwin for ModelCo, Modelco, modelco cosmetics, review, lipgloss review, Hailey Baldwin for Modelco review.

This colour was fixed on my lips for hours (I did not eat but did drink coffee). And after 3 hours the colour was still on my lips as a glossy stain but not as a full first application affect.

ModelCo hit it again and I would rank this company as one of my favourites. I would definitely recommend their glosses all day long.

Let me know what your favourite glosses are in the comments below!

Until next time,

How To: Dress for Any Holiday Party

Tell Everyone...Email this to someoneShare on LinkedInPin on PinterestTweet about this on TwitterShare on FacebookShare on Google+

Tis the season to be glam! So why not use this excuse to dress up to impress. Whether you are wearing your cutest ugly sweat for your friends Holiday “Ugly Sweater Party” or a sexy red cocktail dress to the neighbour’s Holiday Bash, it’s time to dress for the season of parties. Here are some tips on how to look your best this up coming season.

Ugly Sweater Party:

You may have an urge to race to the second hand thrift store when your invite arrives but there are tones of places to get “Ugly Sweaters” that are much more creative. So donate $10.00 to Goodwill (DONATE HERE) for some holiday karma and then race over to sites like Tipsy Elves to get a funny and creative holiday sweater.

two_person_christmas_sweater_3 women_s_santa_sleigh_christmas_sweater_1

Cocktail Party:

Sparkles:

What dressing promiscuous is to Halloween, Sequence is to the Holidays. The holidays are a time to sparkle and you have a window of Christmas to New Years to wear those shiny dresses that sit in your closet calling your fashionable name all year. eb77c27c165d6c7b46f5e3d1ba4bbf51

If you are new to the sparkle life, try pairing minor details like a sequin belt or shoes with a solid base outfit. Or a sparkly skirt with solid shoes and top. If you are a pro then a full dress with solid accessories is acceptable.sparkleRemember to not over do it. The trick is to look sexy and sophisticate, not like a 12 year old girl that got ahold of her mom’s credit card in Barneys.

Remember: You don’t choose the sparkle life, the sparkle life chooses you!

Notice Me Red:

There is something about red that makes me feel like I can do anything and look smoking hot while doing it! If you do choose to wear red to your next holiday party the most important accessories you were is your confidence. This color screams sexy so all eyes will be on you as you walk in the door. Make sure your head and heels are high as you walk through the room. Try an A-line dress or a wrap dress to compliment your figure.

red-dress

Winter White:

What was once a fashion disaster is now a stylish trend. One I hope will never end. Not only does wearing white make you feel luxurious but it also compliments your less than golden completion.

winter-whites winter-whites

We love to layer whites and creams for a stylish and cozy look. Collect and pair garments with rich textures and posh lines. Don’t be afraid of the taboo of  “no white after Labor Day,” be afraid of a life not pushing the boundaries of fashion! You can politely remind those that make a comment who may be falling behind the times.

Happy Holidays!

4 Fun Holiday Party Theme Ideas

Tell Everyone...Email this to someoneShare on LinkedInPin on PinterestTweet about this on TwitterShare on FacebookShare on Google+

I don’t know about you but I am not sure on how many more “Ugly Christmas Sweater” Parties I can attend. Though they are fun, it’s a little predictable and you my dear are anything but ordinary. Here are a few ideas for your next Holiday Party that will be a refreshing experience for your guests

 Gingerbread House Building Competition

This is fun and interactive for your guests whether you are building or just watching the excitement. Each full set Gingerbread House costs $8.00 – $10.00. And your guest can take them home at the end of the night or devour them as a not so healthy Christmas snack!

gingerbread-house-competition-620x430

Set up stations for each team and listen to Christmas carols as you build. Teams can be from 2 people to 5 depending on the size of their workspace and your budget for Gingerbread houses.

ginger

I like to run wax paper over the dining room table and tape the ends under the table. I suggest getting red and green plastic aprons from the dollar store for easy clean up.

Have a merry time while playing a builder elf for the night. This gets your guests creativity going and into the Christmas spirit.

Christmas Carol Karaoke

We know you want to belt out holiday cheer for all to hear so why not enjoy a Christmas Karaoke night!

sakar-monster-high-cd-cdg-karaoke-machine-with-christmas-pack-2-mics-16Either rent a karaoke machine for some home caroling fun or get a private room in a karaoke club for you and your friends.

On a budget? Pre-load YouTube Christmas Karaoke songs on your computer and use an HDMI cord to attach it to your TV screen. This will be easier for guests to see and have more of a presents in the room.

This is a super fun idea and the more spiked eggnog that goes around, the more fearless your guests may become.

Cookie Exchange Party

wine-and-cookies

Ok, this one may have been around for a while but any excuse to drink wine and eat baked goods deserves an honorable mention.

Each person brings 1/2 – 1 dozen cookies for each person involved (pending what the group decides) Holiday themed item they baked to exchange with one another.

This way you have a selection of baked goods to share with your family and friends.

Bring some wine and make a party out of it.

DIY Christmas Decor Party

There are loads of DIYs you can find on Pinterest that high on fun and low on budget. From centerpieces to candles to ornaments, it has it all.

The Ugly Truth of Traveling Alone – Crying on the Streets of London

Tell Everyone...Email this to someoneShare on LinkedInPin on PinterestTweet about this on TwitterShare on FacebookShare on Google+

Traveling alone can be the most scariest and exhilarating experience all wrapped into one unknown roller coaster of emotional endurance and adventure.

You came here to discover what it’s like to travel alone and I will tell you the raw truth. The part you don’t see in the sugar coated blogs and epic videos. The parts of traveling that will change your life, whether they’re your highest high or lowest low.

I, myself, set out on a journey of self-discovery and growth. Traveling alone not only shows you who you are but it reveals things you never knew you were capable of.

When we are close to friends and family we tend to play it safer. We don’t have to try as hard because there is always someone that will help you out. A friend of a friend that can get you an interview. Family that will share their home with you when you’re down on your luck.

You don’t need to go out of your way to make friends or get to know your neighbors because you have an entire network of close friends that you have known for years.

When you travel alone, you are exactly that. Alone. You will see how far your emotional endurance will push you. Let me tell you that sometimes finding a job in a foreign country can be difficult and draining. I remember balling my eyes out in the pouring rain an hour outside London, England on the street. A very proud moment obviously but something that I am grateful to experience. I was able to let go of my emotions and learn that sometimes it’s just you and your surroundings. It’s ok to let go of the ever pressing thought of what others may think. In this moment, I could not have cared less.

I had taken a contract-catering job, a job that I need desperately to keep my funds going. That morning I had been kicked out of my hostel because I had been there 14 days in a row which is the max length most hostels will allow. I would need to leave and go to another hostel close by.

I would have to put my bags in a baggage locker in the basement of the hostel until I returned after work. Once I had packed my bags into the locker I discover, to my dismay, it didn’t close. The coins were jammed. The elevator was out so I had to walk up 8 flights of stairs to the lobby to get my money back and ask for assistance. Once I tried 2 other lockers with the help of a front desk attendant, it finally locked and I quickly set out with my Google maps and email directions.

The directions I was given were like describing a labyrinth maze at best. I took the tube and two buses to get there. My phone was almost dead and if I didn’t arrive on time I would be fired…I was already 20 minutes late. The best I could do was get there and plead my case.

I had called several times with no answer. And finally after the 4th call I got through and said I was on the street trying to find my way. It’s a wonder I couldn’t find the “Green door beside the red door, 3 streets in, behind the car park.” I walked the street counting door numbers as it began to rain, there was no one near to ask for help. I was alone. I was lost and I was helpless. No one was there to help me.

At that moment as the rain poured down, it was like every emotion I had had since coming to London burst out of me. I couldn’t hold it any longer. I balled…on the street…with some swearing accompanying it.

I cried for the loneliness I had been feeling for leaving my friends and family. I cried for the frustrations I had of every job rejecting me. I cried for the difficulty that every task in this city seemed to be. I cried for not being able to follow the worst instructions ever. And most of all, I cried for the man I had left behind to pursue my dreams. A love story that had been cut too short. I didn’t care who was watching me. It came rolling out like an avalanche on what was once a peaceful mountain.

It was at that moment, a woman with an umbrella walking on the other side of the street stopped and stared at me. I didn’t care. She started walking towards me as the rain pounded the pavement she walked so quickly on. I kept sobbing.

I fought to get words out as she walk directly at me: “I am allowed to stand here and cry lady!” But she kept walking towards me.

She walked right up to me, threw her umbrella to the ground and hugged me. She hugged me so tight, it felt as though she put all the pieces of me that seemed to be falling apart back together.

She whispered sternly, “It will be ok. Keep going.”

This embrace from a complete stranger under a gloomy London sky pouring rain, it made me feel a little less alone. It was the first moment of human kindness I had received since I had moved a month prior.

And with that she kept walking.

And I will never forget it.0001ab6a_medium
